Slimy and Scaly Animals Week
Greetings Camp Blazing Trails!
My name is Bellafina the Mermaid. I have traveled all the way from the Mediterranean Sea to learn about the human race. My friends of the sea have heard of your camp's interest in my kind. I would like it very much if we shared information about each other's race this summer. My first question is this summer, why did you choose to come to this camp? I have heard it is a very...how do you say it? Ah yes, fun! I have heard it is a very fun camp.
My second question is: what does it feel like to have feet and to be able to walk? Sometimes I do wonder what it would feel like.
Also, I would very much like to know what ice cream tastes like. When I was at Carolina Beach, I saw humans eating this wonderous treat and have wondered why you humans seem to enjoy it so much. Please send your answers, and any questions you have for me, via my message bottle. Thank you, dear friends! I look forward to corresponding with you!
Love,
Bellafina

-"It's fun having feet so I can walk instead of swim."
-"Freedom! You can go anywhere!"
-"It's easier to go places."
-"Boring."
-"You fall sometimes and that hurts."
-"Blisters."
-"Totally awesome!"
-"Fun!"

-"What's it like being able to breathe underwater?"
-"Can you make spears?"

Weird Science Week
Hello Dear Friends!
I had a lot of fun watching the canoes on the water last week! Some of you small humans are excellent paddlers. Sometimes I wish I could learn to canoe. But I do love swimming underwater, talking to the fish, snipe, and lake sharks. Being underwater is amazing!
Thank you so much for your answers to my questions last week! Mama Llama told me all the answers and I enjoyed gaining some understanding of the human mind. She also told me that you had some questions for me. I've picked out a few of my favorite questions and answered them. First, someone asked, "What do you eat?" Excellent question! I do enjoy the ham you use for bait. I had never tasted it before, and I highly enjoy its salty flavor. I also love a good sea cucumber, as well as a delicious peanut butter and jellyfish sandwich.
THe next questions was, "What are your favorite types of fish?" I love dolphins, of course, as they have long been allies o the mermaid race. When I need a good laugh, I seek out some clownfish. Most of them are extremely funny! And I only use sword fish for bodyguards, as they are very brave.
I also wanted to answer a well thought-out question: "If you break a bone underwater, how do you heal it?" Well, we collect some driftwood from the shore to stabilize the bone, then we wrap it in seaweed until it heals. That was a fantastic question!
Now I must ask you a few more questions. My first question is what are your favorite subjects in school? Merpeople have subjects such as synchronized swimming, singing, oceanography, and foreign languages such as Whale.
Next, I would love to know what S'mores are. Mama Llama told me that you ate them at camp, and I am curious about what they are made of and what they taste like.
My final question is, what are these beads I keep hearing about? How does one earn them? I am very curious about this.
Thank you again for answering my questions. I look forward to our continued correspondence.
Yours truly,
Bellafina

Map Quest Week
Hello my lovely friends!
I hope this letter finds you well. Thank you for the answers to my questions last week! Your descriptions of S'mores made my mouth water and I wish I could taste one! I also enjoyed hearing about the different subjects you have in school. It was most enlightening to hear what human children study.
Once again, I have chosen a few questions to answer. One of the questions I was asked was, "How old are you?" Great question! I am 115 years old. I know that sounds old to you humans, but for mermaids, that is not that old. I only left my parents' sea cave a few years ago. To give some perspective, my great-grandfather is almost 900 years old!
The next question I wanted to answer was, "How many outfits do you have, and how do you make them?" This is an excellent question--very astute! Since my lower half is a fin, I don't need to wear pants or a skirt. So I just make and wear tops. I love wearing tops made out of seaweed and seashells. I have a really pretty one made out of purple clam shells and braided seaweed straps! I also make tops out of coral, shark skin, trash I find in the ocean, and items I find in shipwrecks. I even have a set of pearls I found in the Titanic!
The last question I wanted to address is, "What do you do all day? Do you have a job?" Well, I actually do quite a lot! When I awaken at dawn, I swim 20 laps around the lake to wake up a bit. Then I get to work with my underwater basket weaving business. I take breaks throughout the day to work on my research about humans. During the midday hour, I break for a nice lunch of sea cucumber sandwiches, then I get back to basket weaving. In the evenings, I help my fish choir practice their singing. I certainly keep busy!
Now I would like to ask you a few questions. First, what kind of pets do you own? What kind of pets are common for human to have? Mermaids usually keep creatures like eels, catfish, flounder, puffer fish, and clownfish as pets.
Next, I would like to know what you humans are afraid of. Mermaids usually fear giant squid, oil spills, great white sharks, and pollution.
Lastly, I would like to know what hobbies you human children enjoy.
Thank you again for your questions and your willingness to answer mine! I love your correspondence and look forward to communicating with you the rest of the summer.
Love,
Bellafina

Lions, Tigers, and Bears, Oh My! Week
Greetings, my dear ones!
I so enjoyed reading your letter last week! There are some strange pets in the human world! One day, perhaps I can pet one. The fur of mammals looks soft and warm.
Thank you so much for the lovely questions you posed to me. I am very impressed by your creativity. I will answer a few questions for you, as I love sharing about my world.
The first question I will address is, "What was your favorite sight on your trip to the US?" Excellent question! I saw so many strange and wonderful things on my trip! But a few highlights included the Titanic wreck, a gigantic iceberg, and a giant squid named Frederick. He was so funny! I will have to tell the story of my journey sometime and have Mama Llama relay it to you.
The next question I wish to answer is, "Are there any other magical creatures in the lake?" Most assuredly there are! Besides lake sharks, snipe, and myself, there are quite a few strange creatures in this lake. To name a few, there are water dragons, nymphs, grindelows, giant leeches, and even a talking fish! Of course, I can talk to all fish, but this one can speak like a human! He has been helping Mama Llama teach me English. This lake is a fantastic place to live!
The last question I will answer is, "Do you have a boyfriend?" You made my tailfin blush! But I will answer it. I do have what you humans call a "boyfriend." He comes to visit me and brings me gifts from the human world. He will tell many people he does not believe in mermaids, but he just says that to protect me. He is very sweet, and he makes me laugh a lot! I call him Jason, but you may know him as Junior.
Now I must ask some more questions of you. Jason told me of this wonderous treat called a milkshake. He said it was made from ice cream, which I dearly hope to try on day. He informed me that milkshakes can be any flavor, depending on what you put in them. My question is two-fold: where is the best place to purchase a milkshake, and what is the best flavor?
Next, I would like to know about fireworks. Mama Llama warned me I may hear some this week. What do they sound like? And what do they look like? If any appear in the sky over the lake, I would like to recognize them for what they are.
Lastly, I would love to find out what books you enjoy. Mama Llama has told me about books. My race does not write stories through pen and paper; instead we tell stories through dance and song. Mama Llama has taught me to read and write, and she provides pen and paper for me to practice. She has offered to get me some books, but I do not know what stories to ask for! Can you recommend some? Thank you friends!
As always, I enjoy our correspondence and I look forward to your return letter. Until next time, dear friends!
Love,
Bellafina
